Scotland, Third World Debt ranks high as an election issue Tony Blair is on course to secure a decisive victory in the General Election and hold all 56 Scottish seats won in his 1997 landslide, according to The Scotsman/ICM poll published today. However, the emergence of so-called new politics issues shows how the current campaign, focusing on tax, the economy and Europe, is not chiming with the views of ordinary voters. Intriguingly, Third World debt is a more important issue than Europe for voters, with GM food and genetic cloning recording small but significant support as well. In a major wake-up call for the main parties, the ICM poll also shows that the environment is a much more important issue to voters than tax and the economy. Four out of ten Scots believe the state of the environment is such a crucial issue that it will influence the way they vote while another 31 per cent believe the plight of the countryside is of vital importance.
