The Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign (NSC) and Coda International Training (CIT) have published a four page special report entitled 'Hurricane Mitch, Debt and Economic Justice.' The Report includes a brief introduction to Nicaragua and then examines the role 'free market' economic policies including foreign debt played in turning Hurricane Mitch into a human and environmental tragedy of vast proportions. It also focuses on the education and lobbying work of Nicaraguan civil society organisations (NGOs) on the impact of debt and structural adjustment on the poorest sectors of society.
The Report goes on to present NGO proposals on how hurricane relief and funds saved through debt cancellation could be allocated and the country reconstructed onto 'a path that includes everyone in health, education, production ....instead of reconstructing old inequalities.'
The report is available on the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign Web site http://www.gn.apc.org/nsc or from NSC, 129 Seven Sisters Rd, London N7 7QG Tel: 0171 272 9619 Email: nsc@gn.apc.org Please send SAE in UK with 20p stamp.
