Find out who won the Life or Debt Art Competition

Jubilee 2000 Coalition

Voting for winners of the Life or Debt Art Competition has now been finalised.

The competition was incredibly successful and included entries from across the globe.

Voting was open to all visitors to the Jubilee 2000 website and took place from 7th to 21 st July.

Tbe Jubilee 2000 Latin America and Caribbean Desk and the London Network who organised the competition are proud to announce the 2 winners:

Both belong to the Mukuru schools in Nairobi-Kenya but have very contrasting styles.

In general voters felt that St Bakhita's piece depicted with great realism the suffering inflicted on men, women and children in heavily indebted countries and that it sends out a very clear and powerful message.

St Catherine's piece was seen by voters as an allegorical depiction of the burden that debt represents for people in the most indebted nations. They particularly liked the depiction of the sun on its side as if it too were in mourning, as well as the contrast between power and exploitation.

The Jubilee 2000 Latin America Desk and the London Network would like to congratulate the artists on the high standard of their entries.

The works of art from these two schools will now be made into colour postcards.

Participants were asked to design a mural, banner, sculpture or other piece of art to show how debt affects other young people across the world and what it would be like to be freed from debt.

Schools across Peru will be creating murals for a parallel competition.

Poem on debt written by girls from the 1st Sleaford Girls' Brigade (Seniors)

The longest chain is getting longer. The amount of money is getting stronger.
If we help in every way
We could make tomorrow their greatest day.
Even children as young as five
Are made to work just to stay alive.
Without our help some may not know tomorrow,
Show your feelings, Show your sorrow.
If only other people cared,
Then someone's tomorrow may be spared.
Think of those when saying grace,
And help this world become a better place.
Together say Amen!
