September, 2001. Rally
against racism in Cape Town/South Africa
Lead by Western Cape Activist
Forum a number of organisations have come together to rally against racism and
poverty parallel to the United Nations World Conference on Racism in a day of
action to be held in Cape Town. "With the end of apartheid our people expected
that the land, which was dispossessed would be returned. We believed, as the Freedom
Charter stated, that there would be houses for our people. Our reality is different:
racism scars our daily lives. - As
black people we remain trapped in the apartheid ghettos
- Evicted
from our homes, cut-off from water, electricity and other basic services because
having been made poor by apartheid we cannot afford to pay for privatised services,
and other cost-recovery programmes
- Nor
can we afford expensive treatment to deal with HIV/AIDS, and other diseases and
access to decent health care remains a pipe-dream
- Even
our children suffer as many go to school hungry, often without even shoes and
are forced to pay school fees for inferior township schools.
